Cold sores or tender pimples on the lips caused by HSV-1 (herpes virus) and are contagious from one person to another. Once you get this virus it stays in your body throughout whole life, which means you will probably get cold sores every now and then. Here are some cold sores prevention tips:

Try your best in order to save yourself from cold sores and avoid sharing personal stuff like drinks, lip balm, toothbrush, towel with other people who might have cold sores. The cold sores virus is transmitted through the nose (in mucus) and the mouth (in saliva).

There are many factors responsible for cold sores flare up such as too much sun exposure, stress, or being sick. Try to live healthy by making a regular exercise plan and a healthy diet plan and also take plenty of sleep for making your immune system better.

If you do have cold sores then take acetaminophen or ibuprofen if the cold sores are painful.

Sucking ice pops or cubes is an effective remedy to ease pain and keep cold sores cool.

Eliminate all types of acidic foods from your diet menu; some common acidic foods are spicy foods, oranges, lemonade, tomatoes, salty foods and other types of foods that may cause irritation.

Don't pick at cold sores while you're waiting for them to go away. They may bleed or become infected with bacteria.

Cold sores usually go away on their own within a week or two. But if you get them frequently then do consult to your dermatologist, who may be able to prescribe medication to alleviate symptoms and shorten the amount of time cold sores last.
