Shingles or herpes zoster is a viral infection of the nerve roots. It is well known for causing pain and rash. There are many factors, responsible for causing shingles such as weak immune system, stress, use of certain medication, injury etc. shingles is usually found more commonly in older adults.
The main cause of shingles occurrence is the chickenpox virus. After the successful treatment of chicken pox this virus "sleeps" (is dormant) in your nerve roots and stays dominant forever. But, there are some conditions which are responsible for the virus "wake up”, like weak immune system due to stress or aging.
You can't catch shingles from someone else who has shingles. But a person with a shingles rash can spread chickenpox to another person who hasn't had chickenpox and who hasn't gotten the chickenpox vaccine.
